I get asked all the time about what it was that finally pushed me over the edge, to take the leap and start my own business. It was quite simple really… I desperately wanted a dog! All jokes aside, Bertie (my little terrier) was the catalyst. I knew I wanted to change my lifestyle and he became my excuse.
So after nine wonderful years of working for Jaeger as Head of Marketing, I decided it was time for a change!
I must have spent over a year planning my next move. I knew I wanted to work for myself, so it was just a case of finding what I was going to do. I went round and round with different ideas and then finally came to the decision that I was going to open a shop in my local town. So I set about trying to source product and started to visit all the major trade shows. But do you know what? I could not find a thing to buy. Everything seemed really similar and it suddenly occurred to me, if I can’t find things to buy, other people must have the same problem!
So the idea was born! I remember waking up on a Saturday morning before dawn and deciding I needed to get this idea for the brand down on paper immediately. My boyfriend (now husband) discovered me later in the morning, surrounded by magazines, fabric, paint and cups of tea, looking slightly wide eyed as I excitedly explained ‘I’d got it!’
What followed was lots of research, breaking the news to my parents (Me: “I’m leaving my job to start a business without a name and get a dog!” To which they replied, “Vicky, do you need to sit down?”) handing in my notice and then securing some funding. But that’s a whole other story…
I’d love to hear from you, if you are thinking of starting your own business? Or if you have any questions, just post a comment and I’ll see if I can help.
